What to Do When You Dont Get a Job Offer

What to Do When You Dont Get a Job OfferWhat to Do When You Dont Get a Job OfferIt doesnt matter how many times you experience this type of rejection- and lets face it, if youre actively applying for jobs, rejection is nearly inevitable- the sting never fades. Even if you dont get a job offer, negative emotions dont have to be the last stop of your application process. Heres some tried-and-true advice on how to respond, and bounce back, when youre rejected from a job that you really wanted. Accept Your Emotions Give yourself time to identify your feelings, whatever they may be. You may want to call a friend to vent, go for an intense workout, or write a frustrated journal entry. Choose the coping method of your choice, but after some time spent processing your emotions, do your best to move on. While this may feel like a personal decision, its not hiring decisions are based on a mix of factors, from candidates salary needs to experience levels. Personality may play a role in the mix, but its likely not the most important factor. If youve ever been on the other side of the bewerbungsinterview, chatting with candidates, you know decisions are often made based on gut feelings, or a single important bullet point on a candidates resume. Be Gracious and Stay Connected Send a polite thank-you note to your interviewer and any major contacts youve made at the company, thanking them for their time and wishing them good luck. You can also use this space to request that the company keep you in mind for other opportunities that come up. This is also a good moment to connect on LinkedIn, which will help to extend your relationship. Ask for Feedback One of the worst parts about not getting a job can be wonderingwhyyou didnt get it. Was it a silly joke you made? A poor answer to a question? A typo in yourthank-you note? While legal concerns may restrict a companys response, try asking for feedback on their decision-making process. Frame your inquiry as a positive ( what can I improve?) rather than a negative (why didnt you hire me?). If a recruiter was involved in your application, youre in luck these matchmakers tend to get lots of actionable information from both applicants and employers. Since they dont face the same legal pressures as companies that are hiring, recruiters can be a good source of feedback about your performance during an interview. If you are fortunate enough to receive feedback, avoid being defensive and use it constructively. It can be frustrating to hear that a company rejected you because you didnt have leadership qualities, when in fact you were a leader in several prior jobs. Take that as a signal that you need to think about ways to emphasize your leadership while answering questions, and potentially rephrase parts of your resume. Use any feedback you receive as a way to improve for next time. Review Your Application Process, from departure to Finish Think about the entire process of your application, from when y ou first applied to the job through to your correspondence and interviews. Is there anything you would change? Theres nothing helpful about obsessing over why it didnt work out- instead, focus on solutions for moments that did not go as desired. Frustrated that you misspelled a name in your thank-you note? Plan to have a friend proofread your email next time. Did you flub an answer? Practice how youd respond next time. Work on Your Interview Skills Even if you were not able to solicit information from an employer as to why they didnt hire you, keep your eye on the prize and continue to practice your interview skills so that youll feel positive and confident when the next opportunity arises. Take the time to prepare for the next job interview by reviewing and answering both job-specific interview questions and behavioral interview questions. Then, once youve been offered an interview by an employer, carefully research the company and write down talking points based upon what youv e learned about their company culture, mission, and needs. With the help of a friend or two, role-play the interview before you go in so that youll be well-versed in answering some of the most common interview questions posed by hiring committees. By focusing on your next step rather than brooding about why you werent chosen for a particular job, youll be well-prepared to land the right job when it comes along. The universe works in strange ways dont be surprised if it turns out being a better fit for you than the one you originally thought you wanted

5 things that you will never see positive people do

5 things that you will never see positive people do5 things that you will never see positive people doI make an effort to surround myself with positive people. Positive thinking is a cornerstone of mental toughness because positivity creates a mindset that can adapt to obstacles and roadblocks that show up in both business and life.Unfortunately, positive thinking has become ensconced in a culture of woolly and fluffy assumptions that imply all we need to do is visualize what success looks like - and it will happen It has been reduced to weak platitudes and shallow quotes meant to inspire us to soar to greater heights.Gag.If that wasnt bad enough, positive people are also confused with optimists. Let me clarify for you positive people believe they will prevail in their circumstances rather than believe their circumstances will change. Optimists, however, believe that things will change, and for the better. Positive people rely on their grit and determination to make the most of a ba d situation because sometimes, shit happens. Theyre stuck in an undesirable situation and no amount of hope will change it.An optimist can never relax they cant afford to let sadness creep in. They can try to follow the famous self-help advice and eliminate the word failure from their vocabulary but then how will they explain failure when it strikes? And it will. Positive people are leid afraid of failure because their minds can adapt to their new circumstances and plan for a better iteration next time.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhen times get tough, here are 5 things positive people never do1. Fall for sappy slogansIve read so many articles on how to fill my life with happiness that Im ready to puke. Happiness is the by-product of vacuous and superficial sappy slogans that prey on our emotions. You want real happiness? Grab hold of something with more substance, like joy and contentment.Positive people avoid cheery, sappy slogans that are intended to lift the users mood when they repeat them. Post-it notes litter mirrors and computers across the country and while they boost our mood for a while, the results are temporary.Researchers have discovered that there is a distinct difference between happiness and meaning. When we achieve our goal, we experience happiness for a short period of time. When we achieve a goal freighted with value, we experience joy and contentment that provides meaning for our life. How To Make It Work For You When you try too hard to convince yourself, and others, that youre happy and lovable, all youve done is remind yourself, and others, of what you dont have Instead, focus on goals that are meaningful to you. Happiness is the by-product.2. Forget to plan for the worst case scenarioWhen you remind yourself of what could go wrong, youre not being a pessimist. Youre being smart. You will encounter rude bosses, conniving colleagu es, and pain-in-the-ass customers. Why not prepare for them? There is a place for those who plan for the worst-case scenario so they can plan on how to turn the situation around and make it successful. They imagine every conceivable setback and obstacle and find ways to cope and overcome the adversity before it becomes a reality. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy suggests spending time thinking about the potential downside of a conversation or event in advance can help you avoid an oh shit moment. How To Make It Work For You Imagine how you would handle a bad situation. Assume for a moment that a rival buys your company. Jot down a few ways you might come out on top if it happens. For example, arrange to meet key executives of the rival company so they know youll handle the situation in a professional and respectful manner.3. Set unrealistic goalsPositive people are always realistic about their goals. Gabriele Oettingen, professor of psychology at New York University and the author of Reth inking Positive Thinking believes that part of the problem is that people tend to visualize their goals as already accomplished without thinking about the obstacles that stand in the way.If a rolle is optimistic about the future, theyll enjoy it in the moment but they wont get the energy and motivation they need to attain the goal. Oettingen touches upon the need to differentiate fantasy from visualization. Visualization is a science-based way for people to achieve their goals. The problem happens when fantasy raises its ugly head. The brain is smart and it can tell the difference between a desire to stretch our performance to meet a goal and our fantasy about it.A goal might be to play the guitar. Your fantasy might be for you to perform in a sold-out rock concert. When we daydream about the future, we convince ourselves were already there and are less inclined to put in the effort required to reach our goals.Oettingen feels that a bit of negativity can help us determine whether or not its worth it to pursue our goals. Positive people are not afraid to look at the negative side of an equation. They know it might have something important to tell us. When they contrast the future with the current reality, and assess the obstacles, they might let go of the dream and focus on more realistic goals. How To Make It Work For You We need to be on the lookout for what might go wrong without allowing negativity to overwhelm us. Positive people can hold the zug of a pessimistic evaluation alongside a positive one.4. Let anxiety take overIn her book, The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, Julie Norem wrote At first, I asked how these people were able to do so well despite their pessimism. Before long, I began to realize that they were doing so well because of their pessimism.Norem found that pessimists turned their anxieties into action. Because they expected the worst, they were prepared for it and put more effort into finding a solution.Oliver Burkeman makes an interes ting observation in his book, The Antidote Happiness For People Who Cant Stand Positive Thinking. He argues that because people are led to believe they should always feel happy and motivated, they often put off tasks that dont make them happy. If life were perfect and there were no such things as unpleasant tasks, that mindset might lead to success. But, in the real world, this mindset leads into a downward spiral of unaddressed tasks and actions. How To Make It Work For You Learn to live with the unpleasant tasks and get on with the job at hand. Co-exist with what isnt perfect and do something anyway.5. Ignore the sweet spotPessimists help us anticipate the worst and prepare for it. People who never worry have lower job performance than those who worry about it on a regular basis. Studies have shown that when CEOs are optimistic, they take on more risky projects and often put their companies in jeopardy.Positive people know how to weigh the wisdom of both pessimists and optimists. P essimists are catastrophes waiting to happen while optimists are impractical. Positive people look for the sweet spot that combines the benefits of both approaches. How To Make It Work For You Your success is not determined on whether you are an optimist or pessimist, but rather how you choose your strategies to process information from both sides.Thisarticlefirst appeared onLaRaeQuy.com.

Despite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the day

Despite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the dayDespite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the dayA recent preliminary week-long endocrinologystudy set to premiere at the Endocrine Societys Annual meeting this Saturday in New Orleans, explores the correlation eating later shares with a larger body mass index and body fat.Adnin Zaman, of The University of Colorado School of Medicine and colleagues, analyzed a group of individuals for the study, 90% of which were women with an average age of about 36.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe study began by introducing a trial that limited the hours in which individuals were allowed to consume calories. Each participant was given a little electronic device to strap to their thighs that monitored their activity and sedentary period. They were also equipped with an Actiwatch, which examines sleep and wake patterns. The individuals were also tasked with uploading pictures of their meals on an app called Meat Logger. All participants received an average of seven hours of sleep and consumed calories over an eleven hour period, with most of the latest photo entries coming in around 8 pm.The research concluded that individuals that ate later were associated with higherbei weight gain and greater body mass index. Although the endocrinology study focused primarily on women the researchers believe the data could easily apply to men.In fact, this development adds to research that uncovered similar conclusions. Experts from Brigham University tested the well-observed theory through an experiment of their own on a group of young men. They tracked participants for two weeks with a control period. During the two weeks, the young men were elend allowed to consume calories between 7 pm and 6 am.In addition to losing weight during the experiment and gaining weight during the control period ( the period of time wherein individuals went back to their normal diets and eating times), the results found participants consumed 238 fewer calories when they adhered to the time/eating restrictions provided by the researchers of the study. To be clear, the endocrinologists that motioned the theory, set to be presented later this week, did not specify a particular time that individuals wishing to lose weight should curb their eating. While the researchers behind the Brigham study tested 7 pm as a cut-off time, the data links the unhealthy habits that accompany snacking after dinner rather than the time itself. But as we know the foods we consume after dinner are rarely composed of healthy options. Why does late night snacking come with so much weight gain?A paper publishedin February in the journal Current Biologyfurther expounded upon how poor sleep cycles promote unhealthy eating habits. We simply use less energy to digest food as the day goes on, so that instead of burning calories w e more readily convert them into fat.Lona Sandon Ph.D. additionally occasions hormonal changes associated with times of day to influence weight gain.On mass, if you stay within your recommended calorie intake, its possible to maintain a healthy weight if youre a nocturnal snacker. Eating later just tends to put individuals at risk for over-eating-and over-eating particularly unhealthy foods at that.Sandon suggests we eat a bigger lunch to combat late night cravings, saying,Making the lunch meal the largest meal of the day, with at least a little something for breakfast, has worked for some of my clients to be able to cut back at night or be satisfied with a light dinner. Her recommendation doesnt stand alone. Writer Kelly Burch made lunch the biggest meal of the day for a month and reported her findings in a piece published by Prevention.com.Burch found her self eating less, experiencing fewer crashes and getting better sleep as a direct result of the change. The results were so prom ising Burch intends to make it a staple to her dietary routine, explaining,Eating a bigger meal in the middle of the day just felt healthier than having a heaping plate of food a few hours before bed. That combined with the benefits to my work productivity and evening routine means that eating a larger lunch and lighter dinner is definitely a habit I will keep, she said. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How Improved Onboarding Can Reduce Turnover [INFOGRAPHIC] - Spark Hire

How Improved Onboarding Can Reduce Turnover INFOGRAPHIC - Spark HireOne of the difficult realities of the working world is that people move arounda lot. While employee turnover may keep fresh faces in the office, it can also mean that talent moves quickly through the business and HR might feel that they are eternally stuck in the hiring process. However, employee turnover is inevitable. This infographic from SalesChase.com (listed below) discusses employee turnover within the first few years of an employees tenure with a company. For most employees, this time is crucial. Just within the first few days, an employee begins to see how they might fit in with the team, whether the company lives up to their expectations, and how they might relate to their new boss. Many of their new impressions are based on their onboarding experiences, or how theyre assimilated into the company. When 22% of employees leave their new positions within 45 days of their first day, how can companies improve thei r onboarding so that this wont happen? What does a successful onboarding program look like? Here are some highlights from the infographic. Many of Dave Buis suggestions in this article revolve around an employees first few days with a company. While obviously the main purpose of any employees first day is to begin training them on the work theyll be tackling, Bui says that it will benefit the company long-term to invest in the comfort of their first day.His suggestions necessarily include transparencybeing completely honest with the employee about the job they will be doing. When 58% of employees claim that they left their job because of a misrepresentation of their duties, being open about the particulars of the job might save a company from losing employees due to lack of clarity. This also includes being up front with standard policies so they avoid unintentionally violating one.It may sound like a nicety, but one suggestion Bui makes is to do some of the leg work for the new empl oyee. For example, make sure that their desk is stocked with the essentials and any particular or unique things theyll need for their position. Take the time to introduce them to the entire teamwhether or leid theyll be working with each directlyso they can feel more acclimated to the group. Finally, Bui suggests a few ways to build time into your schedule for the new employee. While for you it may be just another day on the job, the new employee will benefit from your undivided attention. Occasional meetings to check in with them may give an outlet for stress and be a useful place to ask questions that may pop up in the first few days.Onboarding is a process that is tough to nail down for many companies. However, the process can be improved when we have a better idea of how it can affectpositively or negativelythe early turnover of employees.Take a look at the infographic below and tell us what youthinkin thecomments

8 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 2018

8 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 20188 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 2018 The office used to be a place where you would come, put in your eight hours, and go home to those who loved you. Work wasnt a place where you expected friendships or significant connections. However, things have changed. There has been a shift within the workforce towards wanting meaningful work, insists career coach Jenn DeWall . Meaningful work can encompass a variety of things from having a job youre passionate about to working on a strong gruppe and knowing your a valued member. And at the core of that meaningful work is the people you work with. We spend more times at our jobs than we do with our family and friends. Given the amount of time we invest in a company, people want to see a greater return on their time investment. Cultivating better work relationships has also become an essential factor in career growth and promotion . DeWall explains that be cause career advancement comes from networking, the quality of relationships at work can vastly impact your chances for climbing the ladder. If we dont have positive work relationships its harder to build a professional network of resources and advocates that know your value and want you to succeed, says DeWall. Think of your positive work relationships as cheerleaders. The more cheerleaders you have the more people will recognize you for promotions or career opportunities. Now that we know why professional relationships are worth the investment, DeWall offers her insights into how to cultivate and nurture bonds with colleagues. And were not just talking about happy hours. Whether youre new to the team or a seasoned manager, heres how to get beyond the cocktails and casual conversation to really form lasting professional bonds thatll benefit your career. If youre just joining a company, DeWall suggests an informal meet-n-greet. Set up an informal getting to know you meeting. Get to know them. Ask them about their experience at the company, their expertise and also ask them if they would be okay with you coming to them for questions because you are new.No one wants to work with a know-it-all or someone that thinks they dont need help, says DeWall. If you act this way you will likely reduce the number of people that want to work with you. Its important to let them know that you are here to learn from their expertise and to do your best for the team. Always thank individuals that assist with your training and development, especially in the beginning as this increases your probability to have positive working relationships.Take time to understand the culture and norms before inserting your commentary. Make sure that you are showing respect for the companys decisions and how they got to where they are today. This respect and curiosity will develop into stronger working relationships. If youve been in the work world for a while, youve had your share of good and b ad on-the-job relationships, DeWall says that you may need to repair some fractured ties. Her best advice? Acknowledge the challenge or issue that caused the strain and take responsibility. Do not deflect or play the blame game. Own your share of what made the relationship bad. Schedule a private meeting with the individual to have a conversation and apologize. It is never too late to apologize, ever. For managers looking to improve their company culture or team dynamic, take small steps towards change and dont set the bar too high for direct reports. DeWall says, Make sure your team understands what you expect of them. The more they have clarity the more confidence they will have in their ability to do what is asked. If you have ambiguous expectations of your team expect that it will be matched with frustration towards you as youre not giving them clear direction to support their success.Give praise and recognition at least every 2 weeks, DeWall advises senior leaders. People want t o be seen at work, they want to know that they matter. Praise and recognition are the ways to ensure employees feel their value. The more they know their value, the harder they will work.If strengthening professional bonds is on your 2018 list of resolutions , its important to remember that no matter what title a coworker may have, they are just as human as you are. Connect as you would with anyone else. Get to know their interests, dreams, personal lives, hobbies etc. Get to know them . The more you get to know them the more your relationship will grow and strengthen. In this day and age, it can be intimidating or even nervewracking to try to bond with coworkers. Afterall, knowing what is appropriate according to each colleague, or how actions will be interpreted, can be tricky. However, DeWall says that erring on the side of professional courtesy is the best policy. As a general rule practice care and respect for people and see them as individuals, not coworkers. Understand that we have all different backgrounds and experiences which lead us to who we are. Be respectful of those differences, she says. Also, in the age of MeToo, its important for individuals to act with integrity and call out behavior that is inconsistent with it.

You will need to grant Indeed access to your current location, which youll be able to do via a pop-up. Browse jobsYou can browse jobs and press the heart icon to save them. You can then access the My Jobs page from the home screen to view all of the jobs youve saved. Most jobs are available to apply to directly from your phone- youll see an orange line of text saying, Apply from your phone if so. Tips Although the app runs pretty quickly on data, its even faster when youre using WiFi, so keep your WiFi turned on if possible.Applications submitted without a cover letter will likely be ignored. You can upload a supporting document and also customize a personalized message. If youre entering a personalized message, its a good practice to type this somewhere on your phone that can s ave it (e.g., compose an email to yourself) and then copy and paste it into the app. That way theres no risk of losing your work. Its easy to apply to a ton of jobs with this app- but remember that quantity doesnt always equal quality. Once youve submitted your applications, do some research to see if you know anyone who works at the company (searching your LinkedIn connections is a good start) that might be able to flag your resume to be sure it gets seen.

10 career experts share todays most common career challenges

10 career experts share today’s most common career challenges 10 career experts share today’s most common career challenges Every new generation brings a new set of challenges and issues for workers and hiring managers to tackle if they want their companies to stick around for years to come.In 2018, jobs are shifting more towards A.I. technology, managers are struggling to oversee multi-locational teams, and both Millennial and Baby-Boomers are stumbling to communicate effectively. Clearly, today’s modern workforce is faced with a unique set of hurdles for both employees and employers. And it’s up for us to learn how to navigate them if we want to keep moving forward in our careers. So, we turned to the experts to lessen our workplace worries. We asked the top HR leaders and career advisors what they thought were the most common career challenges people are facing today.Read on to discover the biggest career problems they identified and strategies to overcome them:1. The partner’s involuntary career change“In today’s two-income families, one partner can be recruited, promoted, or transferred to a nother city, country or continent, which puts their partner in the unenviable position of having to find another job in a new location. Relocation is disruptive for any family but one partner will often be required to make a bigger sacrifice than the other in terms of career.”So what’s the solution to handling a partner’s unexpected relocation? Get the company to offer benefits to minimize the disruption to the rest of the family.“Ask your partner to negotiate a relocation and job search assistance package as part of the transfer, sometimes this is included in a corporate-sponsored move.”-  George Dutch, M.A. Career Change Expert at JobJoy2. Career transitioning“Many job seekers lack the ability to translate previous work experiences and skills into new industries and employment opportunities. The fact is many employers are looking for personality types, individuals with specific soft skills. The technical side of the job can be taught on-site. The problem is many job s eekers seem to think if they’re last experience does not match a job posting’s desired requirements 100% then they don’t stand a chance and don’t bother applying.”But candidates shouldn’t be afraid to apply for jobs that may not seem like a perfect fit on paper.“There are always areas where an applicant may be lagging but then they may also excel in other areas the company would find valuable.”-  Rudeth Shaughnessy Sr. Editor at Copy My Resume3. Ageism in the workplace“Too frequently I speak to people who may lose their job in their 50’s due to cost-cutting and mergers who then have extreme difficulty in finding work. The strong results can come from teams that include the millennials with new and creative ideas, along with the Gen Xrs and Baby Boomers with deep industry and client expertise. And with there being less new skilled entrants into the workforce compared to those retiring, companies that don’t value the mature works could find themselves understaff ed.”-  Stan C. Kimer, President at Total Engagement Consulting4. The career pivot“People are changing jobs more frequently today than ever before and many also choose to make a career change. It can be challenging, and job seekers should really think about a career they see themselves remaining in for the long term. Making a career change is not something you want to be doing many times over.”-  Natalya Khaykis, Career Expert at ZipJobs5. Balancing meaning and duty“Especially for millennials, the challenge is is finding a job that is fulfilling and has personal meaning. Then they need to reconcile that with the work that “needs to get done” or some of the less fulfilling requirements and objectives of the position. We search for work that meets both business objectives and also fulfills us personally by aligning with our values.”-  Stephanie Troiano, Content Marketer at TheHireTalent6. Too many choices“Today’s single biggest career challenge is figuring out what you really want to do. There are more choices than ever before, and there is more information to process. People have difficulty looking inside themselves for the answer to what they want to do.”-  Younes Lattenist, Founder and CEO of Mintful7. Finding a purpose“We’ve been taught that finding a job we are passionate about is the key to success. The problem is that there just aren’t enough jobs out there for all millennials to find a position that is full of both internal and external rewards. Entry-level jobs can seem especially mindless and insignificant, which is why it’s vital for millennials to think about their medium and long-term goals instead of freaking out about not feeling a sense of purpose during the first years of their careers. Purpose comes with years of experience and investment towards goals and a healthy work/life balance.”-  Lexie Kadlec, Director of Enrollment Management at The Intern Group8. Lack of workforce mobility“Long gone are the days of readily available employees who will move for the right development opportunities. On the employee side it creates a dynamic which results in a greater number of transitions between companies throughout their career to drive professional development and career progression. On the employer side it results in a continuing trend of increased “undesired” turnover.”The burden then falls to HR to develop new strategies for holding onto employees long-term.“The residual effect of this issue is a challenge to corporations and hiring managers to rethink their traditional paradigms of “job hopping” and to be proactive in identifying talent-rich geographies for forecasted future employee growth.”-  Ruben Moreno, HR Practice Leader at Blue Rock Source9. Being moved to another role you aren’t passionate about“The professional world is more cut-throat than ever before, with more skills available to be learned and mastered than at any other point in history; there are more roles , industries and made-up job titles than anyone can count. Because of this, having transferable skills can be a gift and a curse; just because you may be good at something, it doesn’t mean you necessarily want it to be your responsibility. However, if your managers get wind of your ability, you can soon find yourself getting moved about.”-  Steve Pritchard, HR Consultant for giffgaff10. Staying current“Whether it is professional development specifically for your industry, learning the latest LinkedIn changes, or even mastering new computer programs, those who do not evolve will be left behind. Even non-tech-savvy positions like construction now require that the candidates be fluent in online application systems. If you aren’t learning something, you are doomed to a stagnant career at best and potential long-term unemployment at the worst.”-  Donna Shannon, President, Personal Touch Career ServicesThis article first appeared on Kununu.

Business Types FAQ - Information about Corporate Structures

Business Types FAQ - Information about Corporate Structures Business Types FAQ - Information about Corporate Structures What is a General Partnership?A General Partnership is a form of business organization in which two or more individuals manage and operate the business with a view to making a profit. Each partner shares a fixed proportion of the partnership profits and losses and assumes unlimited personal liability for the debts and obligations of the company. One benefit of a general partnership is that partnership income is only taxed once since income flows through to the partners who are taxed individually. What is a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)?Limited liability partnerships are generally restricted for use by professionals, such as accountants and lawyers, and function to limit the liability exposure of individual partners to acts of professional negligence committed by fellow partners or employees. Limited liability is granted to all partners in an LLP. Please note that our partnership agreement is intended for a general partnership and is not suitable for use by a limited liability partnership. What is a Limited Partnership (LP)?Limited partnerships consist of one or more general partners and one or more limited liability partners. A general partner actively manages the business and may contribute capital to the partnership. A general partner has unlimited liability for the debts and obligations of the business. A limited partner, however, contributes capital to the partnership but has no active role in running the business. The liability of a limited partner will only be the amount of capital they contributed to the partnership. Please note that our partnership agreement is intended for a general partnership and is not suitable for use by a limited partnership. What is a Joint Venture?A Joint Venture is a business arrangement where two or more individuals or entities work together for a single purpose and often for a limited time. It allows members to share development costs and resources to create synergies and become more competitive economically, but without becoming liable as general partners for the actions of fellow members. However, where the business relationships between the members of a joint venture become too close, and revenues are intermingled, the entity may resemble a partnership and will risk incurring the joint and several liability that is typical of a partnership. Although all members of a joint venture usually have a view to profit, they do not necessarily pool their profits and losses. Joint venture agreements are commonly used between a local and a foreign company to facilitate the entrance of a domestic business into a foreign market and vice versa. What is a Sole Proprietorship?A sole proprietorship is the simplest form of business entity. In a sole proprietorship there is only one owner (the sole proprietor) who operates in his or her personal capacity. The sole proprietor risks unlimited liability for the debts and obligations of their company. This means that all of the sole proprietors personal possessions are at risk if the business should fail or be sued. One benefit of a sole proprietorship is that it enjoys a single level of taxation. This means that the sole proprietor will pay personal income taxes for the profits made by the business. What is a Corporation?Under law, a corporation is considered to be a legal person distinct from the shareholders (or stockholders) who own it. This means that individual shareholders (or stockholders) are not personally liable for the debts and obligations of the corporation. If a corporation fails the shareholders (or stockholders) will only lose the assets they originally invested to purchase their shares (or stocks). In a corporation, income is taxed at two levels: first on income for the corporate entity, and then at the shareholder (or stockholder) level where shareholders (or stockholders) are taxed on any dividends they have received. You create a corporation by filing Articles of Incorporation with the business regulatory body in your jurisdiction. The document that governs internal business activities of the corporation are called 'Bylaws'. In most jurisdictions you do not have to file your bylaws. What is a Limited Liability Company (LLC)? (USA Only)A limited liability company (LLC) is a business entity that enjoys the more attractive features of both a partnership and a corporation. It is similar to a corporation in that the liability exposure of individual members is limited to what each has invested in the business. An LLC is similar to a partnership in that it is taxed at only one level. Like a partnership, income passes through and is taxed against individual members as personal income. The exact tax implications of an LLC will vary between jurisdictions. An LLC is managed by members or a management team. You create an LLC by filing Articles of Organization with the business regulatory body in your jurisdiction. The document that governs the business relationship between the owners (members) of the LLC is called the 'Operating Agreement'. In most jurisdictions you do not have to file your Operating Agreement. - - Florida Business Formation Learning Center

How to Create a Career Development Plan

How to Create a Career Development Plan How to Create a Career Development Plan Not sure what’s next for you at work? Creating a career development plan will help put you on the path to establishing and meeting your professional goals. Whether you’re content or dissatisfied in your current job, your career development is something you need to be in control of - not something that’s just happening to you. So it’s important to look ahead, even if you feel there’s not a lot you would change about your current situation in the short term. Here are six tips for devising a career development plan that will put you in the driver’s seat as you navigate your next professional move. 1. Think about your destination - and the journey When it comes to career development, you need to think about both the short term and the long term. Where do you want to be in one, two, five, 10 years? While your long-term goal may be harder to visualize, you should be able to clearly define your vision for the next few years. Don’t let obstacles stand in your way if they could be overcome by working hard or taking classes. For instance, if you work primarily in print design right now but hope to become a UX designer, that’s likely a goal you can achieve - but you need a solid plan. 2. Research the positions that appeal to you Are you romanticizing making a move into, say, copywriting? Before you start pursuing your dream job, make sure you really understand what that job entails. Talk to a person currently working in that position to find out about their responsibilities and the various skills required of someone in such a role. Check out job listings for that position to see what qualifications companies are seeking. Finally, talk to a mentor, a career coach or your manager to get another perspective on the position and whether or not they think it would be a good fit for you. 3. Conduct a skills assessment/gap analysis Before you develop a timeline for achieving your end goal, you’ll need to assess your current skill set and determine where it does - and does not - align with the job you want. If you have most of the skills you’ll need, you may be able to start a job search or talk to your manager about a promotion soon. But if you need to build additional skills on the job or attend classes, you’ll want to add that to your career development plan. 4. Make plans to obtain the skills and experience you need If you want to be a strong candidate when making a job transition or seeking a promotion, you’ll likely need a mix of training and real-world experience. Now is the time to research training options and ask your manager for responsibilities that will move you along the path you’ve mapped out. For example, if you’re a designer who aspires to work as an interactive creative director, you may need additional business classes, technical training or experience working face-to-face with clients and managing employees. 5. Set target dates for each milestone If you need to take a series of classes, create a timeline for completing each one based on where and when they’re offered. If you need to ask for more responsibility at your current job before you can move to the next level (see No. 4 above), identify the right time to meet with your manager, whether it’s your next performance review or a standalone meeting. Together, you can establish target dates for stepping up your responsibilities. 6. Hold yourself accountable Creating a plan is wasted time if you’re not committed to sticking to it. Build in accountability by putting check-in dates on your calendar so you can assess your progress and make adjustments to your career development plan - or even your goals - if necessary. And don’t get discouraged if you get off course. It’s better to stretch your timeline and keep working toward your goal than to let it fall by the wayside because you’ve failed to accomplish something in the time you initially allotted. And it’s OK if your plans change. The important thing is that you’ve taken control of your career development and started looking ahead. Subscribe to the blog for more career tips!

The stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-liked

The stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-liked The stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-liked Do you want to  have better relationships? Well, you should definitely take some advice from… the Stoics.I know, it sounds weird. Most people think of the Stoics as being emotionless - not exactly good examples  for how to handle relationships. But that’s a myth. The ancient Stoics were big on virtue, self-control and reducing  negative  emotions. And those are pretty good things if you’re trying to be more likable. And their methods are backed by science. Stoicism was one of the inspirations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is currently the dominant method for helping people overcome psychological issues. To get some answers  I spoke to Massimo Pigliucci, a professor of philosophy at the City University of New York, and author of the new book,  How to Be a Stoic: Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life.So what can we learn about being likable from the ancient Stoics? Let’s get to it…Not MePlain and simple: stop talking about yourself so much. Focus on the other person. Here’s Stoic grandmaster  Epictetus:In parties of conversation, avoid a frequent and excessive mention of your own actions and dangers. For, however agreeable it may be to yourself to mention the risks you have run, it is not equally agreeable to  others to hear your adventures.Yeah, talking about yourself feels good. In fact, research shows your brain finds it more rewarding than food or money. From  Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong:Neuroscientist Diana Tamir found that your brain gets more pleasure from you talking about yourself than it does from  food or money. But you want other people to enjoy your company, right? So shut up and let  them  feel good by talking about themselves.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new book  here.)Okay, so you’re talking about yourself less. But how do the Stoics think you should handle difficult interactions -  like when som eone insults you?Practice “Insult Pacifism”When somebody says you’re dumb as a post,  how do the Stoics think you should respond?“You give me too much credit. I’m a  lot  stupider than a post.”Here’s Stoic hall-of-famer  Epictetus  again:If anyone tells you that a certain person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses about what is said of you but answer: “He was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone.”Yeah, the other person was mean. But what’s the benefit of escalating things into an out-and-out fight? When people insult you, respond with self-deprecating humor. Also,  there are longer term personal benefits to this. Not reacting harshly improves your self-control.And by ignoring the tone and just listening to the content of the insult, you might occasionally get some useful feedback on how to improve yourself. From  How to Be a Stoic: Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life:The more you train yourself to endure insults th e stronger you feel psychologically… it is worth ignoring the cutting aspect of what she is saying in order to focus on what it is that she may have gotten right and that may have eluded you. There is no reason at all why insults, even when meant as such, cannot also be teaching moments for us.(To learn 6 rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, click  here.)So if someone insults you, you’re just going to use self-deprecating humor. But what if  you’re  the one saying something awful? How do you make sure you don’t say something you’ll regret?Listen To The Angel On Your ShoulderWant to make sure you behave properly? Pretend someone you respect is standing behind you. Maybe it’s your grandma or a mentor of yours.Would you want to act  like a jerk in front of them? No.  Here’s Massimo:Seneca felt  you should  go about your life thinking that there is someone looking over your shoulder. Basically, act like  you always have to explain your actions to  this alte r ego.Would you act like that in front of grandma? Then don’t act like that at all.(To learn the 4 secrets to productivity from the Stoics, click  here.)So how do you click with new people you meet? Warning: this next one may feel a little weird. But it’s also a little heartwarming…Treat Everyone As FamilyMost of us see family as closer than friends and friends as closer than strangers. Understandable. But what if you  tried to pull all three of those levels a little closer together… and a little closer to you?  Here’s Massimo:Hierocles invited us to imagine a series of concentric circles with ourselves in the middle, then the next circle is our family, and then the next circle is our friends, then out of that there is our fellow citizens, and out of that our fellow countrymen, and finally all of humanity. Then he said  to  mentally try to bring all of the external circles closer to you. Meaning that you try to remind yourself that these are all human beings, that these are all people that you should actually care about just in the same way that you care about your family and your friends.Sounds nice in theory, right? But how do you actually put this into practice? You know how some  guys say hello to their  male friends with the words, “Hey, brother”?Well, the Stoics approve. And they think you should give it a try.  Here’s Massimo:Hierocles  said you should go around addressing people of your same age as brothers and sisters, and people older than you as aunts and uncles. It’s  a sort of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach to things. It’s like you do that, you keep repeating this thing, and then gradually you actually feel like other people are your brothers and sisters, your uncles and aunts.Yeah, it might feel a little weird to call people brothers and sisters. But if you do it with a wry smile - cool like Fonzie - it can be a warm and fun way to draw yourself closer to others…And them closer to you.(To learn the 4 rituals from Stoi cism that will make you mentally strong, click  here.)Okay, we’ve learned a lot. Let’s round it all up…Sum UpHere are the 4 rituals from Stoicism that will make you loved: Not me:  Stop talking about yourself. Let me talk about me and I’ll enjoy your company more. (Wow, this is more fun already.) Practice “insult pacifism”:  This is the worst blog post  I’ve ever written? Trust me, I’ve written  farworse. Listen to the angel on your shoulder:  Grandma is watching, potty-mouth. Treat everyone as family:  Treat  people as your brothers and sisters and they’ll likely reciprocate. Now is this going to turn you into Dale Carnegie overnight? No. But that wouldn’t be a very Stoic expectation. They were big on practicing exercises to improve over time.  Massimo paraphrased Seneca:“Don’t ask me to be perfect; just ask me to be better than yesterday.”If you talk less about yourself, laugh off insults, and act like grandma is watching, you’ll find that people will enjoy your company much more.Trust me, brother… or sister.Join over 300,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here.Related posts:What 10 things should you do every day to improve your life? How To Make Your Life Better By Sending Five Simple Emails4 Lifehacks From Ancient Philosophers That Will Make You HappierThis  article  originally appeared at  Barking Up the Wrong Tree.

But you have to pay the price to have these things. The primary obstacle in your way is  how you feel  about what you need to  do  to have these things. Most people aren’t willing to feel difficult emotions on a regular basis. However, i f you’re willing to  disregard how you feel in the moment, you’ll have access to a world of opportunity unavailable to 99% of the population. When you feel the fear and do it anyway, you get the satisfaction of living life on your terms. Instead of being a hostage to your emotions, you get to experience them more deeply.Hilariously, once you break past the emotional blocks and just act, it’s never as bad as you think it will be.Make the decision and  actNapoleon Hill said,  â€œWhen your desires are strong enough, you will appear to possess superhuman powers to achieve.”  Similarly, Tim Grover has said,  â€œWhen you crave the end result, the hard work becomes irrelevant.”Put most simply: when the  why  is strong enough, you’ll be willing to do any  how. The clearer and bigger the why, the bolder the how. Hence, if you 10x your why, you’ll have insights about how to do things far more effectively than the norm. As Dan Sullivan has said,  â€œWhen 10X is your measuring stic k, you immediately see how you can bypass what everyone else is doing.”If your dreams are big enough, you’ll have to  do  different things than you’ve been doing. Not all “hows” are created equal. You’ll have to do things you don’t  feel in the moment  like doing. You’ll resist the actions you need to take.If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got. What got you here, won’t get you there. If you want bold results, you need bold actions. If you want it bad enough, your momentary feelings won’t stop you. How you feel  right now  is irrelevant. Of course it’s out of your comfort zone. Of course it may not  feel good  in the moment.Said Tim Ferriss,  â€œA person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.”Are you willing to disregard your momentary feelings to achieve particular results?Start smallLife is practice.Every day is practice. Right now, you’re pra cticing; you’re experimenting.Start with small stuff and work your way up.For me, taking cold showers is great practice. Even after doing it for years, I still often experience a moment of resistance. But I feel the resistance and do it anyways. Within seconds, the resistance I was feeling is replaced with confidence and satisfaction. The more frequently you can confront and walk past emotional blocks, the more successful you’ll be.You will ride some amazing emotional waves. You’ll find yourself in situations and ask yourself,  â€œHow did I get here? How am I going to pull this off?”You’ll put off momentary comforts in order to behave in ways that generate wild success. You can have anything you want in life. There is a path to get there. But you’ll have to face lots of emotional resistance in getting there.Do it anyways.Right now.Don’t delay.Do something right now you’ve been procrastinating.Do something right now that shocks your emotional system. You’ll quickly rea lize it wasn’t so bad. Then do it again, with increasing intention. This is the essence of 10x thinking. Certain “hows” will get you 10x results. Most people won’t go there. Are you willing to go there? How big is the emotional roller-coaster of life you’re going to ride? Small rises and dips? Or huge rises, drops, spins, and twists? Life is meant to be lived, emotions are meant to be felt and experienced. You get to design the roller-coaster.Do you want the result bad enough that you’re willing to feel absurd, horrible, amazing, ridiculous, and stupid to get there?Or, would you prefer feeling safe and regretful? The choice is yours. But everything you want is available. And the more extreme the emotional shock you’re willing to walk through, the faster you’ll get the results you’re seeking.Trust YourselfThere must come a point when you stop worrying yourself over the opinions of others. Even the opinions of your heroes.Your work and ideas must eventually come completel y and unapologetically through you.Only when you fully trust yourself and your ideas will you be able to create in a bold, honest, and beautiful manner. No matter how “successful” you become, trusting yourself never gets easier. In fact, it only gets harder with more external noise and pressure. But you will never be happy with yourself or satisfied with your work if you don’t do what you truly felt inspired to do.Your most honest work will always be your best work. More than likely, it will also be your most successful work.Ready to  Upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. The Real Definition of Digital Publishing

The Real Definition of Digital Publishing The Real Definition of Digital Publishing Search for the definition of digital publishing, and you will be hard-pressed to find a clear answer. FreeDictionary.com simply offers information about e-Books, which is only an example of one type of digital publishing. Google leader in digital publishing and you see results that include Abode who invented and offers one of the most popular portable document file (PDF) generators on the market, as well as a host of new companies offering a broad range of services. John Battelles definition of Digital Publishing is Connecting a community through the art and science of communication. But just as this definition is vague, Adobes PDF publisher is also not an adequate representation of what constitutes digital publishing. The Real Definition of Digital Publishing I can sum up digital publishing in my own words in this way: The use of digital technology to replace written material so that it can be disseminated and accessed through computerized electronic devices. If that sounds too technical, try this: Taking anything that could be done in print, sound, or that can be seen with the eyes and putting it into a format that can be accessed by computer technology. Examples of Digital Publishing Examples of materials that are fast emerging in the world of digital publishing include converting (or creating): NewslettersJournals and blogsAdvertisementsCompany ReportsCatalogsBooks, magazines, and other periodicals,Massive libraries, resource materials, and databases;Scrapbooks. Forms of Digital Publishing While Adobe is arguably the company that put digital publishing on the map by making it an accessible technology for the masses, there are now many ways to publish your works far beyond the PDF. Digital technology includes everything from websites, blogs, and social networking platforms, to games, apps, videos, CDs, and downloadable materials even the simple text message is a form of digital publication marketing. Digital Publishing vs. Electronic Publishing As with any advancing field, the terms used to describe the technology is dynamic and now goes by more than one name. The original term electronic publishing, is slowly being replaced by the terms ePublishing and digital publishing. All three to describe the same technology, however, the term digital publishing is most frequently used by companies offering eServices. What Is an EPUB? To complicate things further, EPUB is sometimes used to describe publications in any electronic format. But this is not accurate. EPUB refer to publications turned into a specific electronic format using a particular file format: EPUB (short for electronic publication; alternatively capitalized as ePub, ePUB, EPub, or epub, with EPUB preferred by the vendor) is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Files have the extension .epub. The Many Marketing Benefits of Digitally Published Materials You might think the biggest benefit of going digital is cost savings, and while it can amount to huge financial savings over printed materials, there is an even bigger benefit: magnified branding of your business. The vast majority of consumers turn to the Internet for information about products, to read reviews, and to shop online. Digital marketers have also tapped into our cell phones text messages sent to the  device holders with offers and announcements reach millions of people every day that would otherwise be impossible to target. The power of digital marketing can be easily seen in how couponing has changed. Coupons are sent via e-mail, offered for online or in-store only deals. But consumers no longer even need to be in front of a computer to take advantage of deals new apps for smartphones allow shoppers to scan the barcode of an item in the store and compare prices. According to SmartMoney.com, Nearly 40% of smartphone owners use their phones for in-store price comparisons, making it the top mobile shopping-related activity, according to Nielsen. And even those with regular cell phones run price checks: During the 2011 holiday shopping season, 19% of consumers used their phone to compare products or prices in store, up from 15% in 2010 and 3% in 2009, according to customer service research firm ForeSee. With digital technology in our hands, clipping coupons from Sunday mornings paper are becoming a lost art. Beyond coupons, merchants can now offer online and via e-mail, digital versions of their catalogs. Digital catalogs have many benefits: Print magazines and catalogs often take  longer to prepare and often require three to six months lead time. Digital versions can be put out there for all to see in a fraction of the time. Once something goes to print it is too late to correct errors in content, pictures, or prices. Digital publications are fast, easy, and affordable to update. Digital catalogs can be engaging and interactive. Unlike print catalog versions which people may put down and forget about, digital catalogs allow users to click for more information or to place an immediate order. Catalogs may also allow consumers to see reviews and ratings, or offer their own opinions about a product. Digital catalogs accommodate the impulsive buyer much better than a printed version. Digital catalogs can be shared with friends, family, and over social networks without giving up your own copy. Digital content and materials of any kind have one standout advantage over printed material printed materials rarely go viral but campaigns, especially those involving video marketing, launched via digital technology can and do.
